Kenya Sevens unveil star squad as Nairobi prepares to host opening leg of HSBC SVNS 2

Nairobi will stage the first stop of the SVNS 2 circuit on February 14–15, a landmark achievement for the country as it steps back onto the world rugby stage with a major international event.

Just two days after World Rugby officially confirmed that Kenya will host the opening leg of the HSBC SVNS 2, the Kenya Sevens management, led by head coach Kevin Wambua, has named a star-studded squad for the 2026 season.

The team has been training consistently for the past two months following the conclusion of the 27th Safari 7s and has now shifted its full attention to preparations for the global series, which begins in February 2026.

Nairobi will stage the first stop of the SVNS 2 circuit on February 14–15, a landmark achievement for the country as it steps back onto the world rugby stage with a major international event.

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Humphrey Kayange, the Director in charge of the National 7s teams, told the KRU Media Team.

“This is a special moment. Kenya gets to host the SVNS 2 leg in Nairobi. Having the calibre of players competing in Nairobi is something we have been dreaming of for many years, and what a platform SVNS 2 will give our players to compete and perform in front of the fans who have been the heartbeat of Kenya Sevens for decades,” Kayange said.

“This is more than just a tournament. It goes to show that the vision we have had for many years to have a World Series event and compete at home will build confidence, visibility, and belief,” he added.

He thanked the supporters, saying, “Your passion has always lifted our teams on the global stage and hosting this event is a chance to come and show the world, once again, what Kenyan rugby spirit looks and feels like.”

Kayange’s message captures the pride surrounding the announcement and the anticipation of seeing the country host world-class competition once again.

The Nairobi leg will feature both men’s and women’s tournaments. In the men’s bracket, Kenya will battle the USA, Uruguay, and Germany, while the women’s competition will see the Kenya Lionesses take on Brazil, China, and Spain. With promotion points at stake from the opening whistle, fans can expect high-intensity matchups as teams begin their push to set the tone for the new season.

Players will include: Kevin Wekesa, Samuel Mosiori, Brian Tanga, George Ooro, Brian Mutua, Floyd Wabwire, Jackson Siketi, Festus Shiasi, Rayvon Ambale, Elvis Olukusi, Vincent Onyala, John Okoth, Daniel Kipchirchir, Dennis Abukuse, Antony Omondi, Eugene Ojiambo and Nygel Pettersan.
